Editing

Today we have started filming the footage that we have and we will try and edit as many footages as we can. we edited scene by scene and we also noted down another shot we might need to take from a specific scene because it might have seen odd or as if something was missing. on the next recording day wed try and go back and record anything we have to.

in relation to editing we started off simple so we just put the clips together and only used the footage that we needed from clips and chipped to think of what goes before what and how. because we had shots of the same scene but in different angles and shot types to try different things and see which shot looks the best to use.

Learning FCP

In this lesson we finished off our final cut pro work and also gained alot of skills from it. we would need final cut pro to help us edit our own final film product and we were asked to put a clip together to help put the film together. it is important for us to learn this because we would need to put to put the film footages together once weve recorded and the editing stage has appeared.

we mainly learned how to use the cut tool properly, and how to mark in and out of the clips to help us keep the parts that we need.

BBT Case study

with regards to our ideas about a comedy vibe that will run through our short film this short clip from the Big Bang Theory helped us give ideas for the romantic day dream that we will have. this will take place when he see's her on the train and starts to fall in love with her. and we thought this is the best case studys to help us get ideas from beacuse 'Raj' is from an indian background and he day dreams about a girl in lunch and he starts to think about her and in his thoughts he dances with her with an indian theme and this is exactly what we want to have in our day dream. the main concept of this extract of which we will interpret the use of culture through music to express a persons emotion or feelings in this case.

Change in Storyline

We have changed a few things in our storyline and so we decided to change our storyboard and the script. we decided to take out the taxi scene from our storyline and also take out the pudding mill lane scene. so now we have decided upon the storyline that he will get on the train to stratford and see the girl on the train and he see's a day dream of her and then gets off to go to the olympics.

The reason why we have done this is because firstly the original idea that mony was going to get into a taxi and go to lverpool street where he gets lost however we had no car available for use so we had to take that out. we also thought we had too many scenes in place so we took the pudding mill lane scene out and kept it simple, even though it is a short film. However everything else is still in place.

6th november

today in our lesson we finalised the dates and also discussed the filming process. we said that we will film at Wednesday evening and film the last scene during that time. on Saturday morning we do the rest of the scenes. we discussed about our characters and their costumes. we decided that we will get an old tradition garments for the taxi driver, the security guards will be dressed up formally and the main guy would be wearing fresh and old styled garments to show that his forein and not really up to date. we had trouble organising a car for the taxi scene however came up with a solution at the end. we decided we would get one of our Friends to get their sisters car. lastly we also sorted out the role of the girl, which we have contacted and spoke to and she is willing to act.

the girl on the bus will be dressed casually however one he has the day dream about her she will be dressed like this, a saree to make herself look traditional. we thought that she should wear this because it will be a steriotype about indian dramas and thier love scenes.
the taxi driver should wear this because he will look more threatening and scary. the main guy will have the suspicioun that he is a terrorist so this dressing will bring more impact.

Recce

This is a picture of ‘London city airport’. We will be using this area because it is needed for out short film to show where the main character will be landing from a country abroad.  The advantages of us using this venue for our short film is that it is the closest of the airports to us to the journey will be quite short.  The fact that we will be filming from the outside near a taxi stand to show his arrival will give a more realistic feature to our short film as it is very cliché in many past films that have been made.

This is a replica picture of the taxi we will be using.  In reality the taxi would not be at the airport instead we will be getting permission at a more local taxi/mini cab office in order to film our scene inside of the car. The advantages of us doing things this way would be that we would save money by not actually spending money to have the taxi go to city airport as it would cost £40. We would also save time because the minicab/ taxi office is very local to Leyton Sixth Form College.

We will be using ‘Liverpool street station’ to show a scene which consist of the taxi driver dropping the main character here. The main character will be lost and the fact that this station is always busy will give a sense of realism as the busy environment will compensate and work in our favour to show the character’s confusion. He will be asking random people how to get to Stratford station of which we would have pre planned this and have asked for the people’s permission.

We will be using a London bus to shoot a scene where the main character will have a sort of day dream of someone who he will fall in love with. The advantages of using a London bus would be that it could sort of replicate a person’s modern day routine on public transport.

After the main character has taken his bus journey, he will arrive in Stratford station in which he will be again asking some people how to get to the Olympics, we are using Stratford station as it is a refurbished station and has gain recent publicity due to the Olympics. He will then make his way on to the stadium be very excited however he will found out that the Olympics have finished and he would be very disappointed as the security guard will tell the main character that his ticket is outdated.

Treatment 1st draft

Treatment

·         The genre of my short film is a comedy.

·         The summary of my short film is firstly the main character is planning to get to the Olympic stadium however although this is the base line of the story the concept is to make a mockery of modern day stereotypes. The main character is a foreigner who has just got out of the airport and his journey begins by getting into a minicab. This journey will consist of many difficulties each with a specific purpose, the main character doesn’t speak however use his face and body to express his feelings and point of view, this will be further strengthened with the use of sound effects.  Our short film consists of the main character being quiet (no diologue) throughout the whole film however we use music to explain his emotions. We also have a taxi driver to take him to the Olympic stadium but the taxi driver ends up kicking him out of the taxi because he checks the drivers personal bag because his suspicious the driver is a terrorist. We also have a lot of other characters as people who give him directions to the stadium once he gets booted out the taxi. There is a beautiful girl as another character because he falls in love with her when he finds her on the bus. And lastly we have the ticket inspector at the Stratford station which tells him that his ticket is expired. The theme of our short film is basically the comedy that the foreigner (main character) does during his journey.

·         Our ideas are inspired by Mr Bean, in his films he doesn’t speak but the audience can understand what is going in the scenes. We are using this similar style of comedy in our short film as well. However what makes us different is that we are putting music behind particular scenes to add greater satire. We have also used inspiration from comedies such as Desmond’s, this is a comedy has an African identity which will help us to get an idea of what African culture consists of so aspects can be portrayed in to our film. Also another comedy that helped to inspire our film was Goodness Gracious Me. This is a comedy based greatly on Asian culture, it manipulates and makes fun of specific traditions or norms in their culture. This is what makes the comedy so funny and successful and it’s the type of concept we will try to implement in our film.

·         The audience for our short film are teens between the ages of 12-19, our film is sports related and the jokes portrayed on our short film are kind of mature. For example during the bus journey his gaze falls upon a beautiful girl and falls in love so he starts to day dream about her. So the topic of love and falling easily in love will be related to teens and their lifestyle so they will be able to connect with the scenes.

·         The approximate length of our film will be 4-5mins.

·         We will need permission to film on the bus from the bus driver, when he gets a ride to Stratford station. We will also need permission of people on the road when he randomly asks them for directions. One of our group members can drive so he will be acting out as the taxi driver. When he gets to the station he gets stopped by the ticket inspector and that’s when he finds out that the ticket is expired, so we will need to ask permission if we can film the ticket inspector.

·         When he is on the taxi, the taxi driver tries to act like a terrorist and he is dressed out in a religious garment and has a bag on the passenger seat which is where the main character thinks the bomb is, however we obviously are not trying to offend anyone.

·         Our film could be screened on youtube because it is a short clip.

Three case studies

Citizen Khan (Mr Khan is a cheapskate)

·        Synopsis of this short film is that Mr Khan the eldest in a Pakistani family is a big cheapskate during his older daughter’s wedding and he comes up with a lot of comedy and drama throughout the scene relating to this topic.

·         The short extract was filmed live, using real actors in a house setting.

·         The extract is mostly about a Pakistani family. The father is a traditional type father and they also stereotype about Asian family’s regarding there accents, clothing norms and values and lifestyle.

·         The setting of this scene is in their living room and the conversation takes place between three people so for this this reason there is a lot of long shots and mid shots to show the conversation. There are also fast cuts between who’s talking.

·         As mentioned the setting of this scene is in their living room, the props in the living room portray that they are an Asian family and this is also another stereotype against them. For example they have sofa covers this might show that Asian people are really cautious and stingy.

·         There is only dialogue in this extract and the accents they talk in are stereotypical as well.

·         The target audience for this extract is anyone, but particularly Asians because only they would understand some jokes because it is about them. However it is also aimed at older people because the jokes that are used are mature.

·         The idea I would use is the idea of using stereotypical views to create comedy.

Eastenders (the fight between Janine and Stacy)

·         Synopsis of this short extract is that two women are having a fight in the middle of a market over love.

·         The extract is filmed in live action using actors.

·         The main characters in the extract are both women and one of them are called Janine who acts like a crazy women because she tries to hurt an old lady and a baby in a pram, while the other Stacy, tries to protect them. This is another stereotype of what happens in most working –middle class white families, there are a lot of fights over love and hatred.

·         There are a lot of mid shots and close ups because it is a fight scene and the director wanted to show the facial expressions of both characters by using mid and close up shots.

·         This is a dialogue only scene with a lot of shouting which show their hatred for each other.

·         The location of this scene is ion a market place so there is a lot of daylight which makes the scene realistic. The props and setting of the scene show that they are a working-middle class family. Both actors are dressed in a stylish outfit which also represent their class.

·         The target Audience for this extract and soap are adults and teenagers because the soap consists of a twisted storyline and is a bit complex and mature topics are discussed.

I would use the idea of using natural sunlight (daylight) to make the scene look realistic.

Kidulthood (You dizzy blud?)

·         The synopsis of this short extract of a film is that a group of young boys that spend most of their time on the street acting like hood rats break into another boy’s house and steal his personal possessions; one of them even flirts with his girlfriend.

·         The short extract is live and consists of real actors.

·         The characters of this extract are teenaged boys with a hood rat attitude, which is also another stereotypical view about the teens living in London. They are represented as dirty and rude.

·         The camera is mostly over the shoulder shots because firstly it is a cramped room which relates back to the idea that boys that spend most of their time on the streets live the life they do partially because of the poverty that they have to suffer, also because the gets hit from behi9nd and this over shoulder shot helps show the view clearly. There is also a POV angle when the boy is on the floor and is getting beaten up, it shows the angle from the boys point of view when he is getting beaten up.

·         The location is in a cramped room which could connote the poverty that boy in London having to go through and could help explain why they are like they are. We also later on see the flat where the house is located in and looks old and rusty. The costumes that the boys wear are baggy and old.

·         There is a sound track of dizzie rascal, a black boy that use to spend his time on the streets when he was young but he is now a famous rapper, this track is played when they run away from the flat and it could emphasize the idea that they are in a rush because the track has a fast rhythm.

·         The target audience for this are teenaged boys and girls that live in London specially.

·         I would use the idea of using a relative track to suit the action of the scene.

Arrangements for actors

Today we have started talking about who will be in our short film and we came up with alot of people. The performing arts group has given us some actors that we can use, however we need to discuss with them about our film. we know some of our freinds that will be perfect for the roles like the buetifull girl on the train and the main character. we also started doing our story boards. we wish to evaluate the characetrs and see if we should use our own friends or isit better to get more experienced actors from performing arts.

Audience feedback- Ideas

Audience Feedback

-“Good idea – if it comes out right”

-“Where will it take place?”
We have a lot of different scenes that we will use in our short film. Firstly we will be shooting in city airport to show that our main character has landed. From there the scen will move on to a taxi because he will be travelling to the Olympic stadium but he gets kicked out the car. The next scene after this is when he reaches…….. he gets on a bus and goes to the stadium which is the last scene the Stratford station

-“What stereotypes will you be picking up on?”
The main type of stereotype that we will use is the Indian stereotype and African stereotype.  They use a lot of the romantic slow songs and the intense music in their drama and films. We will also use a terrorist scene in the short film when he is in the taxi he is suspicious that the drover is a terrorist.

-“Maybe you could have an Indian guy that meets an African woman”
This idea could help meet two stereotypes together so it is really helpful suggestion.

-“Don’t understand how you are going to mix the different themes”
The different themes will blend together in a scene that will show the main character being interested in an African woman.

-“Are all the different themes going to be merged together?”
Yes, they will be blended together throughout the short film in various parts and scenes as I have discussed above.

-“I find it confusing”
At first it is confusing but when yopu break down the scenes it is muchsimpler to understand. Plus because it is a silent film it is hard to understand and because we are using a lot of stereotypes it is hard to understand however we are trying to exceed from our comfort zone.

-“Won’t it be difficult to do as a short video?"
The scenes will be relatively short but because there is a lot of things going on in the film I do understand that we will have to squeeze in or we could reduce the amount of stereotypes that we will use.  The only difficult thing is that we need look for actors and we will be looking for them as soon as possible and will be searching the performing arts group in the college even ask friends.

-“Too many things to do within 4-5 minutes”The scenes will be relatively short but because there is a lot of things going on in the film I do understand that we will have to squeeze in or we could reduce the amount of stereotypes that we will use.

-“Could be a funny short film”We agree as we are going for the comedy aspect, this makes a great impact on our decision on keeping the story line or not because now we know that this idea could work as a short film we will keep looking for more ways to improve our short film.
